Too Overwhelmed to Get Help With Being Overwhelmed?

Have you ever been so stressed, so stretched thin, so completely running on fumes… that when someone suggested you try something to feel better, your immediate reaction was “I don’t have time for that?” Maybe it was a friend suggesting therapy. A coach recommending a program. A podcast episode telling you to slow down. And instead of feeling relieved, you felt almost annoyed—because who has time to work on their stress when they’re already drowning in it? If that’s you, then this episode is for you.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why overwhelm doesn’t just affect your schedule—it affects your nervous system and decision-making
  • The hidden pattern behind waiting for the “right time” to get support
  • How internal pressure (not workload) is often the real weight you’re carrying
  • What shifts when you change your relationship with ambition, rest, and self-expectations

Have you ever been so stressed, so stretched thin, so completely running on fumes that when someone suggested you try something to feel better, your immediate reaction was, I don’t have time for that. Maybe it was a friend suggesting therapy, somebody recommending a program, a podcast episode, telling you to slow down and instead of feeling relieved.
You felt almost annoyed because who has time to work on their stress when they’re already drowning in it? If that’s you, I want you to stay with me today because what I’m about to talk about might be the most important thing you hear this week. Let’s get into it.
Here’s the cruel irony that nobody talks about enough. The very thing you’re trying to get out of is the thing that’s keeping you stuck in it. Overwhelm and pressure don’t just affect your schedule. They affect your nervous system, your mental clarity, your ability to make decisions. They create a kind of paralysis where even the idea of making a change feels like too much because it feels like just one more thing on an already impossible to-do list.
I’ve actually spoken with many individuals recently considering a program I’m running that I’ll share more about later, and they have shared a similar concern regarding joining. They’ve said something to the effect of, I’ve looked at the program and it sounds like exactly what I need, but I’m scared that with everything that I have going on, I won’t be able to show up fully and commit to this.
But it feels counterintuitive because the program is literally about alleviating this kind of pressure and overwhelm. I sat with those responses and recognized that they were self-aware, but they could also see the irony. They knew they needed it, and yet the overwhelm itself was becoming the reason not to get help with the overwhelm.
Does that sound familiar? Here’s what I think is happening. When most people think about getting support, starting a new meditation routine, joining a program, starting therapy, working with a coach, they imagine it as adding something to their plate, and when your plate is already overflowing, that sounds impossible.
I’m already busy. I’m already overwhelmed. You want me to add something else? I get it, but here’s what I want you to understand. The shifts that actually reduce pressure and overwhelm are not about doing more. They’re not about adding another task, another habit, another thing to optimize, something else to check off of your to-do list.
They’re about changing your internal state. They’re about shifting the way your mind and body are responding to everything already on your plate. So that you’re no longer functioning from a place of tension, fear, and constant exhaustion. It’s about changing your relationship with the things you’re already doing and empowering you to set boundaries and say no when necessary.
Let me make this concrete with a real example. I’ve worked with a client who is a successful business owner, and he came to me completely overwhelmed on paper. Things were going well, his business was growing, but internally he was running on constant pressure, stressed, overthinking, and feeling like it was never enough.
As we work together, something shifted internally. He started to recognize these self-imposed expectations. He had been unconsciously placing on himself expectations he didn’t even realize were there. The belief that he had to push harder to deserve success, that slowing down meant falling behind that rest was something you earned, not something you needed.
And when he started to see those patterns more clearly and shift them, that’s when everything changed. Not because he worked harder, but because he stopped carrying so much weight that was never his to carry in the first place, and that was just creating more pressure and stress, making it difficult to think clearly.
Because of this, he became more confident, more decisive, and his business continued to grow, actually more than before. But now from a place of clarity instead of panic. He started spending intentional time with his family, resting without the guilt creeping in and making choices that felt aligned instead of just reactive.
Again, he didn’t do more. But he carried less mentally and emotionally letting go of what no longer served him. The fear, the guilt, the pressure and stress, and his entire perception and approach to things changed as a result. That’s what this work looks like when you focus on creating the internal shifts.
Allow you to change your relationship with the things that you’re already doing with everything. So I wanna offer you a reframe today. Instead of asking yourself, do I have time for this right now, I want you to ask, can I afford to keep waiting until things calm down? And it’s not just about financial affording.
It’s about all of the costs because here’s the truth for high achievers, things rarely calm down on their own. There’ll always be a busy season, a big project, a transition, a reason why now isn’t the right time. Sometimes it really isn’t the right time, and that’s okay. But most of the time when we wait for the perfect moment to address your overwhelm, this in and of itself is a pattern that keeps us stuck in pressure.
It’s the same voice that tells you to push through. Keep going, handle it later. I don’t have time for this now. Later never comes the busy season. The hard season might actually be the most important time to start. Not because it’s easy, but because that’s when you need it most, and because that’s when you can benefit from it most.
So I want you to know if you’re in this place right now, knowing you need support, but feeling too overwhelmed to take steps toward it, I see you. I’ve been there. That’s not weakness. That’s what pressure does. It convinces you that you are too far gone to get help, that you cannot handle it right when you need it the most, and you’re not too far gone.
You actually may be in exactly the right place to make these changes. Whatever that looks like for you, whether it’s becoming more intentional with your morning routine, making the jump to start therapy or doing anything else where you can shift. Your relationship with yourself and as a result with the world around you.
And speaking of which, if it resonates, I’ve been quietly building something for exactly this person. It’s called From Pressure to Ease, and it is a small group program for high achieving professionals who are ready to loosen the grips of pressure and stress without losing their ambition. If that sounds like you, you can go to calmlycoping.com/ease to learn more and apply.

If the founding cohort happens to be full, or you’re listening to this in the future, I still suggest that you check this out because I will be running future rounds and when you get on the wait list, you’ll be the first to know.
So take a breath. You don’t have to figure it all out right now. Just take the next small step and realize that overwhelm is not a reason. To not take care of yourself. While you wait for next week’s episode, I have other episodes about calming your mind, improving work-life balance, and feeling more confident from within.
